Old testament prophecies regarding the birth of Jesus

All nations will be blessed through Abraham

OT - Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

NT - Acts 3:25-26 25. And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, 'Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.' 26. When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways."

God's covenant with Issac's ancestors

OT - Genesis 17:19 Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

NT - Romans 9:6-8 6. It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." 8. In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.

Christ would come from Bethlehem

OT - Micah 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. "

NT - Matthew 2:4-6 4. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5. "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 6. " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "

Jesus would be born of a virgin

OT - Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

NT - Luke 1:35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Jesus will go to (and come out of) Egypt

OT - Hosea 11:1 "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

NT - Matthew 2:14-15 14. So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt 15. where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."

Rule would come through Judah

OT - Genesis 49:10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.

NT - Luke 3:33 33. the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, 34. the son of Judah,...

(Jesus is a descendant of Judah)

Jesus will descend from David and receive an eternal kingdom

OT - 2 Samuel 7:12-13 12. When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

NT - Matthew 1:1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:

John the Baptist predicted

OT - Isaiah 40:3-4 3. A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the Lord ; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. 4. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.

and

OT - Malachi 3:1 "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the Lord Almighty.

NT - John 1:23 23. John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "

or

NT - Matthew 11:10 This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

or

NT - Luke 1:76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,

or

NT - Mark 1:2 2. It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way" -- 3. "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "

* This is interesting; a kind of scriptural mash-up. Mark attributes the passage to Isaiah, but the first half is clearly from Malachi. There is a similar anachronism in Matthew 27:9 where the author attributes Jeremiah with a Zechariah passage.

Jesus would be preceded by Elijah

OT - Malachi 4:5-6 5. "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."

NT - Matthew 11:13-14 13. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

or

NT - Matthew 17:12-13 12. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13. Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

or

NT - Mark 6:14-15 14. King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him." 15. Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."

or

NT - Luke 1:16-17 16. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. 17. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

and then there's this,

NT - John 1:21 19. Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " 21. They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."

Christ would be called God's son

OT - Psalm 2:7 I will proclaim the decree of the Lord : He said to me, "You are my Son ; today I have become your Father.

NT - Hebrews 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father " ? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son" ?

or

NT - 2nd Peter 1:17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

or

NT - Luke 9:35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."

this can keep going...

Jesus would be the star coming out of Jacob

OT - Numbers 24:17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth.

NT - Matthew 2:2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

and

NT - Revelation 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
